Which Brazil? Portuqual?

Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon – PORTUGAL

12/02/2026

In this performance, artist Ricardo Aleixo explores the tensions that have historically shaped relations between hegemonic cultures and those subordinated by colonialism.
The performance is a kind of “environment-book,” interweaving poems, excerpts from interviews and theoretical essays, graphic elements, phrases in an invented language, video images, sounds recorded in cities around the world, and real-time “vocographic” and “corpographic” improvisations.

An artist with a strong experimental inclination, engaging both with the legacy of the twentieth-century avant-gardes and with the most radical currents of Afro-diasporic art and thought, Aleixo expands the set of unsettling questions that characterize his poetics: “Which Brazil? Portuqual?”

This event is part of the complementary program of the exhibition complexo brasil, curated by José Miguel Wisnik, Guilherme Wisnik, and Milena Britto.

Performance by Ricardo Aleixo and Natália Alves.
